Deported to Somalia, a return trip to Miami

A Twin Cities attorney representing a Mayo Clinic cardiovascular technician under a deportation order is seeking to have his case reopened after a flight carrying him and 91 other Somali citizens to their home country was re-routed back to the United states after facing logistical problems.

"It gives hopefully some additional time. We always hope for the best, but we are prepared for the worst," said Kimberly Hunter, a Twin Cities immigration attorney representing Mayo Clinic employee Abdoulmalik Ibrahim.

A married father of four children who are U.S. citizens, Ibrahim was detained three months ago by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents during one of his regular check-ins. Ibrahim has been under a deportation order since 2004 for entering the U.S. without documentation seeking asylum, but had presumably been under a "protective status" before his detention.
